Chemist Helen Sharman beat off competition from 13,000 applicants to become the first Briton in space, joining the Anglo-Soviet Juno Mission in 1991. During her week-long space flight, visiting the Mir space station aboard Soyuz TM-12, she undertook medical and scientific experiments.
This painting was commissioned by the Faculty of Sciences in 1999 to enhance Staffordshire University's Mellor Building.
