Dateable to c.1782, portraits of the same model appear in works in the Musée Cognacq-Jay, Paris, and the Musée Fabre, Montpellier. The self-conscious charm of 'Head of a Boy' was admired at the sale of the prince de Beauvau in Paris in 1865, where it was described as ‘a ravishing head, which has as much charm and grace as that of a young girl’.
