George V is here portrayed in the uniform of the Admiral of the Fleet. This is probably the last portrait of him, commissioned for a personal friend of Queen Mary.
John Shirley-Fox was a Bath portrait painter and miniaturist. He was also one of the leading authorities on coins in the country. He won the British Numismatic Society’s Triennial gold medal in 1930.
