Originally thought to have been a portrait of Field Marshal James Keith (brother of George Keith, 10th and last Earl Marischal), this portrait was recently reidentified as being of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia. In 1740 Frederick succeeded his father as king of a small Eastern European state. By the end of his reign, following a series of wars which enlarged the country, he had transformed Prussia into a European power and had become known as 'Frederick the Great'.
