This painting is a portrait of Frank Schon. He and Fred Marzillier set up their Marchon Chemical Company in Whitehaven in 1941. From the early years making firelighters to later mass producing detergents for household products, Marchon was a major employer in Whitehaven for decades. The company was taken over by Albright and Wilson in 1955. The artist, originally from Leyland, moved to the Lake District in 1950. He was a distinguished portrait painter and member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.
