A particularly fine example of Pater's decorative style, 'Fête in a Park' can be dated to the 1720s because of its strong Watteauesque character and spirited execution. When lent by the duc de Morny to the Boulevard des Italiens exhibition in 1860, Thoré-Bürger praised it as one of Pater's best works. It was sold to Lord Hertford for 29,000 francs (about £1,160), a record price for Pater at the time.
