This painting depicts 'Esther', a three-masted schooner built at Fleetwood by John Gibson in 1875 for Richard Warbrick, a ship owner. It was 101 feet in length and could carry 153 gross tons. It was the twenty-second large vessel built at Gibson's yard, and only two more large ships were to be built there: the 'John Gibson' and the Pilot Schooner 'Albicore' were built after 'Esther'.
