Edward Shipley Ellis was the only son of John Ellis, railway pioneer, and Martha Shipley, who died shortly after his birth. He was responsible for helping to set up Leicester Museum, the free library, the Art School, the Permanent and Temperance Building Society. A Leicester Literary & Philosophical Society member (1852), he became Mayor in 1860 and followed his father as Chairman of the Midland Railway at the time of its maximum expansion.
