Dorothea Lieven was a Russian noblewoman; wife of the Russian ambassador to London (1812–1834) and a brilliant personality. The artist who this work is after, Sir Thomas Lawrence, succeeded Reynolds as Painter in Ordinary to the King in 1792 and was elected RA in 1794. He became President of the Royal Academy in 1820.
