Michael Garton studied at Exeter College of Art (1955–1957) and then at the Slade School of Art (1957–1960). He first taught at Cardiff College of Art for three years and then at Exeter College of Art (now Faculty of Arts, University of Plymouth) for 27 years. Influences on his work included John Constable and the wider British landscape tradition. Much of his work was based on close observation of wooded landscapes.
