Daniel George Bingham made his fortune abroad, living and working in Utrecht, but he never forgot the town of his birth. His philanthropy included the Bingham Public Library (1905), the Bingham Hall (1908) and an extension to the Cottage Hospital (1913). He encouraged successive librarians to collect local history material and paintings and drawings relating to Cirencester.
