Dame Freya Stark, author and explorer, was well known for her books on the Middle East and was a recipient of many awards. She studied Arabic and Persian and travelled in remote areas of Iran and Arabia where few Western travellers had ever been. An accident when she was 13 years old left her face slightly disfigured, and this has been disguised in this portrait by painting her face from the unblemished side.
