Half-length portrait of Colonel Sir William John Kent, County Controller for Civil Defence for the County of Stafford from June 1940 to October 1945. His family home was Hough Hall, near Crewe, Cheshire. Trained as a solicitor, he became a Major in the Army in 1908 and Lieutenant Colonel in 1916. He was Chairman of the National Council for the Pottery Industry from 1926 to 1928, Justice of the Peace for Staffordshire from 1927, President of North Staffordshire Chamber of Commerce from 1932 to 1946, High Sheriff of Staffordshire from 1942 to 1943, and President of the British Pottery Manufacturers' Federation in 1950. He was Knighted in 1952.
