The artist, who specialised in portraits and genre subjects, was born in Dumbartonshire and studied for three years under Hubert von Herkomer. He exhibited at the main London galleries from 1893 and also at the Paris Salon, where he won a gold medal in 1923. Elected to membership of the RBA in 1897 and of the RP in 1912, he became an associate member of the RA in 1919 and a full member seven years later. Many of his portraits were for presentation to institutions and societies.
