In this portrait the sitter, aged about 47, wears the uniform of esquire to the 1st Duke of Wellington, as Knight of the Bath. This consists of a round, soft black hat, a round frill collar and a white sleeveless coat over a red silk undercoat. In his right hand he holds the Duke’s banner, and he is wearing the Waterloo medal on his chest.
