This portrait depicts Colonel J. B. Garside who served with the 6th Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers from 1916 to 1940. During the First World War he was awarded the Military Cross for leading a successful raid on German trenches. Colonel Garside was also awarded the Distinguished Service Order in the Second World War, whilst commanding the 6th Battalion's retreat to Dunkirk.
