John Joseph Barker was a member of a family of artists. His grandfather, father and two of his brothers also painted. Most of the Barkers specialised in landscape, but John Joseph had a keen interest in narrative painting. He enjoyed depicting pivotal moments in dramatic stories.
Unfortunately, we do not know the subject of this quickly executed oil sketch, but it clearly depicts a scene full of dramatic tension.
