In his 20s, Charles Davis was a painter of shop signs, coaches and houses. This portrait shows him in later life, and he seems to have gone up in the world. He is portrayed as a smart, respectable man. By this time he was an artist and supplier of artists’ materials, and Beach depicts him as every inch the successful businessman.
