Between late August and early October 1933, Lucien was on holiday in Wales, lodging at Brynfield, Reynoldston, Gower. He painted five works on this trip, including this unfinished view of Cefn Bryn, the highest point on the Gower peninsula. It is identical in composition to a finished work, 'Cefn Bryn, Gower' (Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea), and may have been a preparatory study for that work, rather than an abandoned replica.
