The Thames & Severn Canal was opened in 1789 creating a link between the Rivers Severn at Framilode and Thames at Lechlade. This bridge on the summit level crossed the canal at Furzen Leaze west of Siddington, where a mile long arm made a connection to Cirencester, essential for both trading opportunities and water supplies.
