This painting depicts a crashed aeroplane, probably an Italian Savoia-Marchetti SM79 bomber. It has burned through to reveal its skeletal structure. How the crash happened and what became of the pilot remain a mystery. The artist painted the wreck during the Second World War, whilst working in Britain as an Official War Artist. His sober, documentary style here is very different from his peace time paintings, which have a Surrealist, dream like quality.
