This is an example of European Modernism which has affinities with the work of artists such as Josef Albers. These works are purely abstract, there is no narrative or representational content, rather they explore the characteristics of colour and the visual perception of the viewer. In this painting various areas of colour superimposed upon the blue create an impression of spatial depth. In particular the interaction of the complementary colours, blue and orange, create a powerful impression.
