Derek Southall was born in Coventry. Since the 1960s he has been an avant-garde artist working with canvases of unusual shapes.
His brother-in-law drowned at Blackwater in Hampshire, an event which influenced the title and colour of the painting. If you look closely the surface reflections reveal a lot of painting under the present paint layer. Southall changed his mind about this painting as he worked on it. He was aware that his previous thoughts would be visible in the surface of the final work.
