This small panel painting, depicting a bearded man drinking from a beer mug or stein, is a copy after an unknown example of a type of painting particularly associated with the Dutch genre painter Adriaen van Ostade (1610–1685). While there were a number of seventeenth century Flemish and Dutch painters working in this genre, Ostade is considered to be the principal artist producing small, half-length scenes of peasants drinking or smoking in the windows or doors of taverns
