Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812–1852), architect and designer of the new Palace of Westminster. The frame was designed by Pugin and made by Crace. Pugin's coat of arms, bearing a martlet and with the motto 'en avant' above, appear in the painting and are also carved into the ornate gilded frame.
