Augustus Frederick (1773–1843), Duke of Sussex, was Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England, the governing body of Freemasonry in England and Wales, from 1813 to 1843. During this time he introduced a number of rules and customs that are still part of Freemasonry today. In this portrait he is wearing the breast star of the Order of the Garter, the highest chivalric order in the United Kingdom.
