Augusta Frances Anne Hoare ('Gussy') was the only surviving child of Augusta Frances East and Sir Henry Ainslie Hoare, 5th Baronet, when she was painted by the artist in London. Frederic Leighton was a friend of her mother, whom he had painted two years earlier. In this portrait she is only 14 ½ years old and her youth is denoted by the smock she wears over her dress. She later married William John Nettleship Angerstein (d.1892) in 1868 and her second husband, Colonel J. St Aubyn Hastie (d. 1901), in 1894.
