Vanessa Gardiner's landscapes of sea and rock are abstract in an accessible way, with subtle and inventive colours. She works in acrylic on board, which she scrubs and abrades with wire wool and sandpaper, building up layers of colour and cutting them back, creating a series of surfaces. Sometimes she saws up the boards, reassembling them like a jigsaw puzzle. This painting is one of the works she completed whilst holding a Prince of Wales Bursary at the British School of Athens, one of the British Academy's sponsored overseas schools, in 2009–2010.
