Simms was an amateur Victorian artist. His father was part owner of a brewery in Bath which Simms took over in the 1840s. He exhibited at the British Institution and the Royal Society of British Artists in the 1860s. The Victoria Art Gallery owns a number of his landscapes including views of the West country and also Naples and Venice.
