Arthur Farre (1811–1887) held a number of prestigious positions including Fellow of the Royal Society, professor at King’s College and physician-extraordinary to Queen Victoria.
He was an examiner in midwifery at the Royal College of Surgeons but resigned from this post in opposition to proposals to admit women to midwifery examinations.
Farre was also a keen photographer and amateur musician. He bequeathed to the Royal College of Physicians a valuable collection of more than a thousand rare obstetrical and other works.
