Though best remembered for his watercolours, Gillies painted many successful oils, such as this one of Anstruther, a harbour scene which he depicted on several different occasions. This particular work, however, sees Gillies departing from his previous depictions of the scene which were mainly influenced by the works of artist Paul Klee, whose exhibition Gillies visited in 1934.
