As Minister of Health in the 1945 Labour Government, Aneurin Bevan (1897–1960) spearheaded the establishment of the National Health Service (NHS) in Britain in 1948. The first NHS hospital to open was Park Hospital in Trafford, Manchester, officially opened by Bevan himself on 5th July of that year.
