A Bolognese, Albani studied under Carracci in Rome before returning to his native city. The inscription gives the sitter's age as forty-two, in the year 1636. He holds a letter addressed to himself at Bologna. Nothing is known about him except that he was the father of Andrea Calvi (1627–1679), a distinguished lawyer and priest.
