Exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1824. The subject is derived from chapter V of Walter Scott’s novel 'A Legend of Montrose' (1819), though it does not illustrate an episode described in the text. Allan M’Aulay holds the severed head of Hector, one of a clan of Highland bandits called the Children of the Mist. He had sought revenge for the barbarous murder of his uncle.
