This was painted in 1863–1864 and depicts part of the grounds of Watts's residence, Little Holland House, in London. The title is taken from Gray's 'Elegy in a Country Churchyard'. Watts painted a second version in 1868, replacing the knight with a labourer. The first version was greatly admired by John Ruskin.
