Born in New York, William Gallagher attended the Glasgow School of Art (GSA) from 1937, gaining his diploma in 1947. He joined the teaching staff of the GSA in 1968 and worked mainly in the School of Architecture until 1978. The sitter, the architect Alexander Adam, had been the GSA's Head of Architecture during the 1940s.
