This painting depicts an action that took place during the War of American Independence. It was fought on 16 January 1780 between a British fleet of 18 ships (10 ships are depicted), commanded by Admiral Sir George Rodney, and a Spanish fleet commanded by Admiral Don de Langara. In the foreground is the 'San Domingo' being attacked and destroyed by the 'Bienfaisant'. Rodney's flagship the 'Sandwich' is third from the right.
