The sitter was born in Edinburgh, second of the three sons of Charles Black (1755/1756–1826), master builder, and his wife, Isabella Nicol (1757/1758–1847) of Drygrange Farm near Melrose. He married Isabella, daughter of James Tait, an Edinburgh builder, in June 1817. As a publisher and printer he established the house of A. and C. Black, whose publications included the Encyclopaedia Britannica and the Edinburgh Review. Adam Black served as; Master of the Merchant Company, 1831–1832, Lord Provost of the City, 1843–1848, and as Member of Parliament for the City, 1856–1965.
