This painting formed part of the important horological collection put together by Courtney Adrian Ilbert (1868–1957). This was to be sold by auction in 1958 but Gilbert Edgar provided sufficient funds for it to be purchased for the Museum. It shows an unknown nobleman and his lady, possibly of the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century. The watch, which is single-handed, is probably earlier, perhaps around 1660.
