The Whitby family lived at Haywood Abbey, Great Haywood. Thomas Whitby (1531–1621) acquired Shugborough. His son John Whitby sold Shugborough to the Anson family in 1624 and purchased Haywood Abbey, Great Haywood. His great-grandson, John Whitby JP, purchased Oakedge, Colwich around 1750. His son the Reverend Thomas Whitby sold Oakedge to the Honourable Thomas Clifford and purchased Creswell Hall. He died in 1828.
