Painted c.1655–1660, 'A Family Group by a Fountain' is less carefully finished than the other two pictures by Coques in The Wallace Collection and was described as ‘an inferior work of the master’ by Dr Waagen in 1854. The background and trees may be by another hand. The picture which his agent Samuel Mawson described in a letter to the 4th Marquess of Hertford as ‘a very fine cabinet specimen & wanted for Manchester house & ought to be secured’, was purchased at the 2nd Baron Northwick sale.
