Working in France during the period of the Napoleonic campaigns, the artist found conditions favourable to his specialisation in battle scenes and military subjects. The soldier on horseback in this painting wears the Hungarian-style uniform of the hussars, or light cavalry. This unit of the Napoleonic army was renowned for the skill of its soldiers as skirmishers.
