This painting is by an artist who came to Whitehaven in the late 17th century and lived for the remainder of his life in Cross Street. He painted three versions of this picture (the others in Holker Hall and Yale University). Painted during Whitehaven's heyday this painting clearly shows the 'gridiron' pattern of the town.
