Among the paintings are dramatic seascapes and views of Scarborough including works by Atkinson Grimshaw and Ernest Dade. The Gallery also displays works by Lord Leighton, Ivon Hitchens, Matthew Smith, Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious.
Works are arranged in a series of galleries that tell the story of Scarborough: 'Ship to Shore' explores Scarborough's relationship with the sea. 'A Trip to Scarborough' features the Tom Laughton Collection and looks at Scarborough's history as a tourist destination. 'Dress to Impress' examines the fashions people chose to be painted in and what this said about how they wanted to be seen by society.
The Gallery has a lively temporary exhibition programme including talks and holiday activities for all the family.
