FAQs

Find out more about the Summer Exhibition, the Newcomer's Prize and the voting process.

Q1:
What is the Summer Exhibition?
The Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition is the largest open contemporary art exhibition in the world. It shows the work of both established and unknown living artists. The exhibition has been held annually since the Royal Academy's foundation in 1768. It encompasses architectural models, paintings, sculpture and prints, most of which are for sale. For more details about the exhibition, visit the Royal Academy website.
Q2:
What is the Newcomer's Prize?
The £10,000 Newcomer's Prize is provided by Insight Investment, the sponsor of this year's Summer Exhibition. It will be awarded to the winning artwork from a Top 20 shortlist. The criteria for this award is that the artworks can be from any discipline but the artist must be a first-time exhibitor at the Summer Exhibition. The Top 20 shortlist was selected by a panel of judges and can be viewed here. The prize will be presented in the final episode of BBC Two's Summer Exhibition which will be broadcast Sunday 24th June at 7pm.
Q3:
How can I join in?
Watch Summer Exhibition on BBC Two at 7pm on Friday 22nd, Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th June. Vote online for your favourite artwork from the Newcomer's Prize shortlist. Visit this year's Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy.
Q4:
How do I vote for my favourite art work?
To vote for your favourite artwork go to our Top 20 Vote page. To see a larger representation of the artwork select 'Enlarge Image' or go straight to the vote by selecting 'Go To Vote'. You’ll need to fill out a small form for security purposes and then select 'Vote'. Consider your choice carefully as you are allowed to vote once per stage (see how the voting process works below).
Q5:
How does the voting process work?
Stage 1

Online voting opens on Monday 11th June and closes at midday on Saturday 23rd June. The Top 5 artworks will be announced during the programme which starts at 7pm, Saturday 23rd June.

Please remember that you can vote only once. The BBC has measures in place to prevent multiple voting and any evidence of cheating or irregularity in voting will result in votes being discounted.

Stage 2

Online voting will open at 8pm, Saturday 23rd June but the votes cast in the first stage will be discarded and the online vote will return to zero. As in the first stage, you can only vote once so consider your choice carefully. Online voting will then close at midday on Sunday 24th June.

You can also vote by filling out a form at the Royal Academy. Again, only one vote per person is allowed.

Q6:
How can I enter a painting into next year's Summer Exhibition?
Details will be available on the Royal Academy website from January 2008. An artist is entitled to send in a maximum of three works.
