File Under Sacred Music - Background

Taking as their starting point a 20 minute long 'bootleg' video documenting a seminal 1978 performance by The Cramps at Napa Mental Institute in California, Iain and Jane staged an accurate re-enactment of the performance. This took place at the ICA in London on 3rd March 2003, with Cramps vocalist Lux Interior played by Alfonso Pinto from The Parkinsons, Holly Golightly as Poison Ivy, Bruce Brand from Thee Headcoats as guitarist Bryan Gregory and John Gibbs from Holly's own band as drummer Nick Knox. Iain and Jane worked in consultation with mental health arts organisations - Core Arts, Sound Minds and Mad Pride - to collaborate with mental health service users, who formed the invited audience.

The event was filmed and then edited in order to meticulously re-create the content, spirit and degraded, dated aesthetic of the original bootleg video. As well as being streamed exclusively on the BBCi Arts web site, the film will also be presented in events, exhibitions and screenings throughout 2003, starting with a special London premiere at the ICA on 13th June, exactly 25 years after the original performance at Napa by The Cramps. This will be followed by a nationwide tour.
