Lord Byron - She Walks in Beauty, published 1815

She Walks in Beauty is from Hebrew Melodies, lyrics composed for adaptation to traditional Jewish tunes. Its subject seems to be Byron's beautiful young cousin, Anne Wilmot.

But it is more. She becomes an emblem, almost religiously, sacredly conceived. It is not merely her physical grace, beauty and composure which is described, but also a moral purity, spiritual grace, "a mind at peace with all below", a heavenly acceptance which transcends earthly existence.

She illustrates the beauty of mind, spirit and body united. There is a deliberate Old Testament usage of "walk": she "walks" in beauty as the devout walked in the light and way of God.
