Here lies in earth a root of Hell, Set by the Deil's ain dibble; This worthless body damned himself, To save the Lord the trouble.

This short verse addresses suicide, perceived by Burns to be a sin: 'This worthless body damned himself,/To save the Lord the trouble.'
