Our first public-facing Blue Room

Blue Room Birmingham's Blue Room is one of three in the UK with others located in London and Salford.

The BBC's Director General, Tony Hall, has announced a series of initiatives at BBC Birmingham as the Corporation's Midlands HQ builds on its role as the centre for skills and talent for the whole of the BBC.

Included in that list is the BBC's first public-facing Blue Room. Situated in the entrance to the building, the Blue Room will bring to life the amazing content and innovations in technology available from the BBC, as well as the latest trends in technology impacting on BBC audiences.

The Birmingham Blue Room is broken down into three sections:

  • Taster Section - Preview of fresh new content, with an opportunity to interact with it, including things like 360 degree video.
  • Showcase Section - Promoting the platforms we broadcast on, including iPads, TV and online, giving the audience an opportunity to see the breadth and depth of our content.
  • Innovation Section - A showcase of the very latest new concepts in the BBC.

The key focus is on engaging the public with our content and collating all our output and content types in one place. And there will always be someone on hand to educate and inform.

Blue Room The other initiatives coming to Birmingham include a Birmingham Writer in Residence and The Digital Innovation Unit

BBC Director General Tony Hall said: "When I last visited BBC Birmingham I said we would do more for the city.

"Since then investment has gone up 50% per year to £125m and we've moved significant parts of our operations here.

"Now we're making BBC Birmingham more open to the public and working with some great creative partners. I want everyone to come to our home at The Mailbox and get involved."

The Blue Room in Birmingham is open 10:00 - 17:00 Tuesday to Saturday.
