Twilight star Taylor Lautner will join the second series of BBC Three comedy Cuckoo.

The Hollywood heartthrob is best known for playing the werewolf Jacob Black in the film adaptations of Stephenie Meyer's popular Twilight books.

He replaces American actor Andy Samberg, who played the eponymous lead - a self-appointed spiritual ninja - in the first series. But it appears Cuckoo has gone missing, presumed dead, after a walk in the Himalayan foothills.

The second series takes up the story two years after his disappearance with his widow Rachel, played by The Musketeers actress Tamla Kari, attempting to rebuild her life.

The BBC said Lautner will appear as a "handsome and mysterious young stranger" who visits her Lichfield home in Staffordshire, looking for Cuckoo.

Greg Davies and Helen Baxendale will renew their roles as Rachel's parents with Outnumbered star Tyger Drew-Honey as her brother Dylan.

Davies was nominated for a Bafta award for his performance, while the show drew around 900,000 viewers when it debuted on BBC Three in 2012. The critically-acclaimed comedy has also been repeated in a late-night slot on BBC One.

BBC Three controller Zai Bennett said: "Cuckoo was one of BBC Three's most stand-out comedies, so I'm delighted to welcome it back with the addition of superstar Taylor Lautner joining the critically-acclaimed Greg Davies and an outstanding British comedy cast for what will be one of the comedy treats of the year."

Lautner has also starred in Hollywood films Abduction and Valentine's Day, and has been the youngest host of the American comedy Saturday Night Live.

With a tendency to appear topless during the Twilight films, he won the inaugural MTV Movie award for best shirtless performance in 2013, saying, "For us shirtless actors out there, this is like winning the Oscar".

Samberg recently won a Golden Globe award for his appearance in American police comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
